Hand God An Arrow
Do you ever feel like you're walking around with a bullseye on your shirt?
Days when it feels like everyone wants to take a shot at you.
Or maybe just one very persistent archer who has plenty of arrows in his quiver.
David knows how you feel.
In the Old Testament book of 1 Samuel, you can read about King Saul being rejected by God because of disobedience.
About David being chosen as the next king.
And oh yeah.
Even as God's new man of the hour he spent years and years on the run from Saul.
He may have been next in line for the throne, but he was hiding out in the wilderness.
In caves.
With that wonderful bullseye on his shirt.
Just read the Psalms he wrote during that time.
Here's an excerpt from Psalm 54:
Psalm 54:2-3 (ESV) "O God, save me, by your name, and vindicate me by your might. 2 O God, hear my prayer; give ear to the words of my mouth. 3 For strangers have risen against me; ruthless men seek my life; they do not set God before themselves."
Even in the midst of being pursued, David kept his focus on the Lord:
Psalm 54:4 (ESV) "Behold, God is my helper; the Lord is the upholder of my life."
Trusting God when the heat was on.
At the time it didn't look like a successful plan.
But God shot His arrow at Saul's own hidden target.
It wasn't on his shirt.
And it was much harder to hit.
It was buried deep in his heart:
1 Samuel 18:14-15 (NKJV)"And David behaved wisely in all his ways, and the Lord was with him.15 Therefore, when Saul saw that he behaved very wisely, HE WAS AFRAID OF HIM."
David's godly obedience was an arrow that Saul.. with all of his power... couldn't deflect.
The same is true for us as followers of Christ.
Hand God an arrow.
Swoosh!!!
Bullseye.
